Advent Season

BLESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

There’s a voice in the wilderness crying, a call from the ways untrod:

Prepare in the desert a highway, a highway for our God!

The valleys shall be exalted, the lofty hills brought low;

make straight all the crooked places where the Lord our God may go!

O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up to the heights and sing!

Proclaim to a desolate people the coming of their King.

Like the flowers of the field they perish, like grass our works decay,

the power and pomp of nations shall pass like a dream away;

but the word of our God endureth, the arm of the Lord is strong;

he stands in the midst of nations, and he will right the wrong.

He shall feed his flock like a shepherd, the lambs he’ll gently hold;

to pastures of peace he’ll lead them, and bring them safe to his fold.

 Gathering to Worship

 We worship one God; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit

*indicates standing for those who are able

Introit: Comfort, Comfort Ye My People  (the introit text is on front page)

Apostolic Greeting and Call to Worship:

Minister: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit. Amen.

*Call to Worship (Psalm 96) Beth, you may reformat this Psalm for space needs.

Minister: Oh sing to the LORD a new song;

sing to the LORD, all the earth!

Sing to the LORD, bless his name;

tell of his salvation from day to day.

Declare his glory among the nations,

his marvelous works among all the peoples!

For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised;

he is to be feared above all gods.

For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,

but the LORD made the heavens.

Splendor and majesty are before him;

strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples,

ascribe to the LORD glory and strength!

Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;

bring an offering, and come into his courts!

Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness;

tremble before him, all the earth!

Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns!

Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;

he will judge the peoples with equity.”

Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;

let the sea roar, and all that fills it;

let the field exult, and everything in it!

Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy

before the LORD, for he comes,

for he comes to judge the earth.

He will judge the world in righteousness,

and the peoples in his faithfulness.

All: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

All: Amen.

Reconciliation with God     (Amos 2:4-8)

Thus says the LORD: “For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they have rejected the law of the LORD,         and have not kept his statutes, but their lies have led them astray, those after which their fathers walked. So I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the strongholds of Jerusalem.”

Thus says the LORD: “For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals—those who trample the head of the poor into the dust of the earth          and turn aside the way of the afflicted; a man and his father go in to the same girl, so that my holy name is profaned; they lay themselves down beside every altar    on garments taken in pledge, and in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined.

Unison Prayer of Confession Beth, you may reformat this Psalm for space needs.

God of publicans, Be merciful to me a sinner;

I am a sinner by nature and practice.

Your Word tells me and I can’t deny it.

Yet You have not left me to despair,

for I see the saving power of Jesus in the gospel.

In spite of the number of my sins,

as uncountable as the sands of the sea,

You have given me a sign of Your favor

in Your merciful Son, for His blood cleanses all those countless sins.

I am encouraged by His all-sufficiency,

and to Him like a sheltered port, I come in the midst of storms.

To the fountain of forgiveness He opened at the Cross,

I come to drink.

Sin is hateful to You,

but, alas, not so to me.

Change that, do not make me happy with myself

when I do not long to be holy like Yourself,

Let me find it all true and real in the Savior,

that, knowing and loving Him,

I grow to be more like Him.

In Christ’s name I come. Amen. (Stephen D. Doe suggested by a prayer in The Valley of Vision)

Words of Comfort

Minister: Hear these words of comfort found in Micah 7:8,9

Rejoice not over me, O my enemy; when I fall, I shall rise; when I sit in darkness,         the LORD will be a light to me. I will bear the indignation of the LORD       because I have sinned against him, until he pleads my cause       and executes judgment for me. He will bring me out to the light; I shall look upon his vindication.

Declaration of Pardon

Minister: Brothers and Sisters, you have confessed your sins to almighty God. Do you believe that Jesus Christ, by His perfect life, sacrificial death and glorious resurrection, has atoned for your sins and satisfied the wrath of God toward you? If this is your case, in the name of Christ and by the authority of His Word I declare to you that your sins are forgiven and you are not under condemnation of God. Amen.

“Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.” (John 20:22-23 ESV)

Call to Prayer

Minister:  The Lord be with you

People:  And also with you.

Minister: Let us pray.

(Offered in the Minister’s words and concluding together with the Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be thy name,

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our sins,

As we forgive those who sin against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.
